basket case is the name of a recent exhibition held at the national gallery of zimbabwe in harare and curated
by zimbabwe born designer heath nash. the exhibit featured basketry work from various local craft groups
assembled together by the not-for-profit organization the new basket workshop. the new basket workshop
provides design and product assistance to basket producers in southern africa. the craft groups exhibiting
in basket case were the binga craft centre, bulawayo home industries, lupane women’s centre and the zienzele
foundation. heath nash’s designs were among those works displayed, his lighting designs were produced
in collaboration with local craftspeople. despite the importance of craft in zimbabwe, this was the first craft
focused show held at the national gallery in almost 30 years. besides exhibiting works from the artists,
the show also demonstrated how design can improve the lives of rural basket workers.
